Fixing Your Suspended License
In South Florida, namely Miami and Broward, there are tens of thousands of people driving around with suspended licenses. These suspensions occur for a number of reasons.
The most common reason why your driver's license may be suspended is because of your failure to appear in court for a traffic ticket, or your failure to pay a traffic ticket. In my
criminal defense practice, I represent countless clients charged with DWLS (Driving While License Suspended), as well as clients charged with the felony offense,
Habitual Traffic Offender. Most of my clients had their licenses suspended due to traffic ticket-related issues.
Other common suspensions occur for failure to pay child support or failure to maintain proper auto insurance. Also, your license may be suspended as a result of a
DUI, or as a result of a conviction for a
drug offense such as possession, sale, or trafficking of
marijuana,
cocaine,
oxycodone, methamphetamine, or heroin (just to name a few).
Also, your driver's license may be suspended for points on your driving record.
12 points within a 12-month period―30-day suspension
18 points within an 18-month period―three-month suspension
24 points within a 36-month period―one-year suspension
Points are accumulated due to moving violations, such as speeding, running a red light, or failure to maintain a single lane. You do not generally accumulate points for non-moving violations.
If you have three DWLS convictions in a three-year period, you will be a Habitual Traffic Offender. Your license will be suspended for a period of five years, and if you are caught driving on a Habitual Traffic Offender (HTO) revocation, you can be charged with a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
