Trafficking in Oxycodone
Trafficking in oxycodone (OxyContin) is arguably the most serious trafficking offense in the State of Florida.
That is because the penalties for trafficking in oxycodone are among some of the toughest nationwide.
Oxycodone is an opiate that doctors prescribe for the pain associated with a severe injury or post-surgical recovery.
Oxycodone is the generic name. The drug is more commonly known by its trade name, OxyContin.
In the State of Florida, trafficking in oxycodone carries some of the harshest penalties around.
From 4 grams to 14 grams - and remember, this might be just a handful of pills - the MINIMUM sentence a judge can impose is 3 years in state prison, as well as a $50,000 fine.
From 14 to 28 grams, the MINIMUM sentence a judge can impose is 15 years, with a mandatory fine of $100,000.
If the amount is 28 grams or more - maybe 75 pills or so - the MINIMUM sentence a judge can impose is 25 years, with a mandatory fine of $500,000.
Trafficking in oxycodone is punishable by up to 30 years in prison. If the accused is charged with
armed trafficking in oxycodone, the maximum penalty is life in prison.
Like all trafficking offenses, trafficking in oxycodone is measured by the weight of the drugs. For instance, just a couple of pills will equal greater than 4 grams. In that case, the charge goes from
possession of oxycodone to trafficking.
Florida's government has determined that trafficking in oxycodone is one of the worst crimes imaginable. For that reason, the State has approved strict measures of enforcement. One of those measures is the 25-year mandatory prison sentence for anyone convicted of trafficking in 28 grams of oxycodone or more.
