A Delray Beach man has been arrested in a road rage shooting that injured two people west of Boca Raton, according to reports.
The shooting happened at 8:46 p.m. Saturday at Glades Road and State Road 441, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. The accused was later arrested.
Driving a Cadillac convertible, the accused was stopped at a red light when he got into an argument with people in a car next to him.
The driver of the second car told investigators the Cadillac stopped abruptly in front of them as they drove east on Glades Road. The other driver slammed on her brakes and honked, she told deputies, according to the report. The driver of the Cadillac, later identified as the accused, began to get out of his car. The other driver drove past him.
At the intersection with Diego Drive, the accused pulled up next to the driver's car at a red light. That's when he pulled out a .35 Smith & Wesson revolver from his fanny pack and began shooting, the report said.
He shot four rounds into the car, shattering windows and injuring two passengers, the report said.
The alleged victim sped off and took the injured to West Boca Medical Center. A witness followed the accused and gave police his license plate number.
Police tracked the accused to his home about 45 minutes later. When he was arrested in his driveway, he had the gun used in the shooting, the Sheriff's Office said.
He told police the youths were tailgaiting him and shouting angrily. He said the passengers seemed enraged and unpredictable, so he started shooting, the Sheriff's Office said.
He is being held in the Palm Beach County Jail on $50,000
bond.
If the accused's story is that "the youths were tailgating him and shouting angrily," he still will not have a right to use lethal force unless he had a reasonable fear that the other driver's were attempting to hurt him, or were attempting to use their car as a weapon.
Florida's Stand Your Ground Law permits the use of lethal force, but only when faced with lethal force, or you are trying to stop the commission of a forcible felony.
