Being Charged With A Crime

When you are charged with a crime, it feels as if the world is against you. Crimes are prosecuted by assistant state attorneys; lawyers who work for the government with all the resources of the government available to them. It can be very frightening.

Needless to say, you enjoy your freedom. You enjoy being able to do what you want, when you want. You enjoy the little things - waking up in your own bed, driving a car, being able to go wherever you like. Those are facets of our lives to which we give little conscious thought. However, when faced with the loss of your freedom, those things mean the world to you.

Even being charged with a misdemeanor can be daunting. Misdemeanor offenses carry jail time, fines, probation, and the possible loss of your driver's license. If adjudicated, you will bear a criminal conviction for the rest of your life.

Felonies are even more frightening. Every felony offense in the State of Florida carries the possibility of prison time. More serious felonies - those involving the use or possession of firearms - carry mandatory sentences.

All trafficking offenses carry mandatory prison time in Florida.

When those criminal charges are pending, life seems to come to a grinding halt. You can't sleep. You can't eat. You may become depressed. If the charges are serious enough and there is a significant chance of prison time, you may consider fleeing the country, or even suicide.

What you must remember is that you are presumed innocent. It doesn't feel that way, but you are. Charges can be fought. Mandatory sentences can be waived. Good things can come in bad situations.
