In Florida, it is a 3rd degree felony punishable by a maximum of up to 5 years in prison for the offense of falsely impersonating a police officer.
Specifically, Florida Statutes makes it a felony for "any person who deliberately impersonates or falsely acts as a public officer or tribunal, public employee or utility employee, including, but not limited to, marshals, judges, prosecutors, sheriffs, deputies, court personnel, or any law enforcement authority in connection with or relating to any legal process affecting persons and property, or otherwise takes any action under color of law against persons or property."
This may include pulling somebody over and impersonating a police officer. It may also involve showing somebody a badge.
If armed, you could face additional charges or even enhanced penalties.
Impersonating a police officer could entail minor conduct, such as merely telling somebody you are a police officer in an effort to get them to do something. It could also entail serious conduct, such as telling somebody you are a police officer in order to gain entry into their home.
Impersonating a police officer may be charged by itself, or it could accompany more serious charges.
