Cargo thefts, which can consist of massive heists involving millions of dollars in stolen goods.
Cargo thefts may involve elaborate schemes, which is why those charged with cargo theft are often charged with grand theft first-degree (if the dollar amount is over $100,000), and organized scheme to defraud. If violence of any type of break-in is used to obtain the property, charges such as robbery or burglary may also follow.
Grand theft in the first degree is a first-degree felony punishable by a maximum of 30 years in prison. Restitution is almost always a condition of any plea negotiation.
Cargo theft crimes are taken seriously by prosecutors, and may be assigned to specialized economic crimes units to their organized, sophisticated nature.
