Miami-Dade County Launches Drug Court for Military Veterans

In recognition of the fact that Drug Court programs are widely successful, Miami-Dade County is taking the lead by launching a Drug Court program specifically for military veterans.

Today's Miami Herald reports on a new program that is being introduced in Miami-Dade County Court.
Drug Court is a program that enables people accused of drug crimes to receive treatment and counseling as opposed to criminal sanctions.
Like regular Drug Court, instead of facing jail, defendants are enrolled in treatment programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. They also face random drug tests and report monthly to the judge. Veterans who repeatedly test positive for drugs may be sentenced to jail. Click here to learn about Drug Court violations.
However, as a program specifically designed for military veterans, this Drug Court addresses problems that are unique to the veteran community. This may include job placement, vocational training, affordable housing, and treatment for combat-related mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. The program also assists veterans with the VA in getting their benefits.
Drug Court is typically a program for possession-level offenses, such as possession of cocaine and even purchase of cocaine or other substances. However, it may be possible to get into the program even if charged with possession with intent to sell, depending on the circumstances.
