After being stopped for speeding, a 15-year old, who allegedly did not have a driver's license, was tapped on the shoulder by a Miami Springs police officer and asked to step out of his car. Instead, according to police, the teen grabbed the officer’s arm and floored the gas pedal.

Reports indicate that the accused may have reached speeds of 80 mph as the officer dangled from the Mazda’s window. The officer was able to roll away from the car and get to safety. The officer suffered cuts and bruises but is expected to recover.

The car was allegedly reported as stolen.

The accused reportedly darted into an industrial neighborhood on foot, where he was caught hiding in a shipping container. He is being charged with attempted murder, grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving.

Given the seriousness of the charges, the juvenile may be charged as an adult. This process, where the case begins in juvenile court but is transferred to "adult" court, is known as a juvenile direct file.

If the case remains in juvenile court, the accused could face juvenile sanctions. If sent to Circuit Court (adult court), he could face a maximum of 25 years in prison on these charges.
