Drug trafficking is one of the most serious types of drug crimes a person can be charged within the state of Florida. This offense can potentially lead to extensive prison terms, with some sentences amounting to decades of imprisonment. Drug trafficking involves the delivery or sale of large amounts of controlled substances, oftentimes across state and international borders. When drug trafficking offenses involve large-scale operations and when they cross borders, they can become federal offenses, meaning that they will be investigated by the FBI and the DEA. Drug trafficking charges can still be brought even in cases in which the drugs are counterfeit.

The state of Florida has certain drug amount thresholds for drug trafficking. This means that if a person knowingly sells, delivers, manufactures or brings into the state a certain amount or more of a drug, the offense is automatically considered trafficking. For example, the threshold amount for marijuana is more than 25 pounds or 300 or more plants, as described under the 2012 Florida Statutes §893.135. The threshold amount for cocaine is 28 grams, and the threshold amount for morphine, opium, oxycodone, hydrocodone, or certain derivatives (such as heroin) is 4 grams. In Florida, drug trafficking is punished more harshly than other drug crimes and lead to minimum mandatory sentencing upon conviction.
