Memorial Day Weekend is a time for celebration, but it is also a time of increased police activity.
In South Florida during Memorial Day Weekend, law enforcement is out looking to make arrests. Remember, the "business" of arresting people generates money for the county. Court costs are typically $400 - $500 just for a misdemeanor! Memorial Day Weekend is popular among tourists, meaning that lots of people from out of town will be visiting Miami-Dade and Broward.
I find that during Memorial Day Weekend, many people are arrested as a result of the DUI checkpoints that are in place. Also,
possession of marijuana arrests are common as police are out in public, and if the
smell of marijuana alerts them to an area, arrests are going to be made.
Regardless, Memorial Day Weekend is a time for both misdemeanor and felony arrests. And if you are not from South Florida and need to return home, hiring a criminal defense attorney may prevent you from having to come back to Florida to deal with your case.
