Miami Police Crime Sweep Nets Over 50 Arrests

A City of Miami Police Department "crime sweep" operation netted over 50 arrests during the past week.

Miami neighborhoods Overtown, Wynwood, and Allapattah were specifically targeted by officers. Between October 3, 2012, and October 5, 2012, 55 arrests were made in these neighborhoods as a result of this sweep.

Most arrests were felony arrests, although several misdemeanor and criminal traffic arrests were made as well.

Specific details included reverse drug stings (where the cops sell the drugs to bust buyers) and prostitution stings.

These crime sweeps are supposed to be good for a neighborhood by eliminating crime, but more often than not, these sweeps lead to volumes of arrest with very little regard for the rights of the accused.

Last spring, I was interviewed by the New Times regarding a Christimas 2011 operation that was similar to this recent one. You can read the article to hear my thoughts on operations such as these.
