In Florida, you may be eligible to apply for a Business Purposes Only License, also called a "Hardship License."
This is a special driving permit that allows you to drive for very specific reasons. This Hardship License, or Business Purposes Only (BPO) License, may be obtained if you have a suspension, including a DUI suspension (assuming it is your first DUI).
So if you obtain a BPO, remember - this is not a driver's license that permits unrestricted driving.
A BPO is only for certain driving purposes. Failure to abide by the terms and conditions of a BPO can result in your arrest for Driving While License Suspended (DWLS).
Here are some of the reasons for which you may drive on a BPO:
1) You may drive to and from work (commuting).
2) You may drive for the purpose of work-related travel or on-the-job driving. This can include making deliveries.
3) You may drive to and from medical and dental appointments. You may also drive to and from the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions.
4) You may drive to and from school and school-related functions. This includes all education-related driving, including driving to and from college or university campuses to attend classes, as well as trade school or night school programs.
5) You may drive to and from religious services and places of worship.
6) You may drive your kids to and from school or daycare.
7) You may run basic errands, such as visits to the grocery store.
Here are some of the reasons for which you may NOT drive on a BPO:
1) Any form of pleasure or recreational driving.
2) Driving for the sake of driving (no destination).
3) Social events. You cannot drive to a friend's house or a party or a social gathering.
4) You cannot drive to the gym.
5) You cannot drive to a bar or restaurant.
6) You cannot drive to a professional sporting event.
If you have a BPO, it is very important that you follow the rules. Failure to do so may result in criminal charges.
