A Miami-Dade County man will was sentenced to 25 years in prison today in Broward court after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter.
The family of the alleged victim was in court today to tell the judge their thoughts on what should be a reasonable sentence.
On February 20th 2012, police say that the accused's blood alcohol level was was twice the legal limit when he collided with the alleged victim's car, which was stopped at a red light in Hollywood.
The alleged victim died at the hospital.
The accused received such a stiff penalty because he had been deemd a Habitual Felony Offender, or commonly referred to as an "HO." He's been convicted for robbery, kidnapping, grand theft and carjacking with a firearm.
Because of the HO designation, the accused was subject to stiffer penalties. The accused faced a number of other charges in addition to the DUI manslaughter charge. Normally, however, DUI manslaughter carries a maximum of 15 years. He was sentenced consecutively on other charges, adding up to 25 years in total.
